Nonprofit Runway Calculator

Nonprofits face strict fiscal responsibility guidelines and donor scrutiny. Grant disbursements often arrive in lump sums separated by months of steady program expenditures. Calculate your unrestricted operating reserves and safeguard your mission.

Industry Benchmark Guidance (6–12 months):The Nonprofit Finance Fund and charity watchdogs recommend 6 to 12 months of operating reserves. Holding less than 3 months places critical community programs at severe risk if an annual foundation grant is delayed or denied.

Financial Calculation Methodology & Transparency

How the Runway Calculator Works: Mathematical Model & Assumptions

1. Static Cash Runway Formula

For businesses with steady revenue and predictable overhead, runway is determined by dividing liquid cash reserves by net monthly cash deficit:

Runway (months) = Available Cash ÷ Net Monthly Burn

2. Gross Burn vs. Net Burn

  • Gross Burn: Total cash disbursed each month (payroll, contractors, hosting, rent, utilities).
  • Net Burn: Gross monthly expenses minus total monthly cash revenue collections.
  • Break-Even: When Net Burn $\le$ $0$, cash runway is mathematically sustainable or infinite.

3. Dynamic Growth Projections & Interpolation

When revenue growth or expense inflation rates are enabled, the engine calculates month-by-month compound flows up to 60 months:

Ending Cash(m) = Beginning Cash(m) + Revenue(m) - Expenses(m)
Fractional Month = Beginning Cash(depletion) ÷ Monthly Net Burn

We linearly interpolate the exact day/fraction when cash reaches $0, avoiding arbitrary rounded whole months.

4. Client-Side Privacy Guarantee

Every financial computation executes exclusively inside your local browser runtime. No financial balances, revenue figures, or payroll numbers are sent to any remote server or database.

Primary Cost Drivers

Major Burn Drivers for Nonprofits & Charities

Direct Program Operations

Community service delivery, essential educational materials, field personnel, and facility leases.

Grant Compliance & Administrative Staff

Auditing, non-profit tax reporting, grant application management, and regulatory compliance.

Seasonal Donor Fatigue

Lulls in charitable contributions during spring and summer following peak Q4 year-end giving campaigns.

Actionable Levers

How to Extend Nonprofits & Charities Runway

1

Build a Monthly Recurring Donor Circle

Convert one-time holiday donors into $25/mo or $50/mo sustainers to establish predictable monthly operating cash.

2

Negotiate Multi-Year Grant Commitments

Request 3-year recurring grant commitments from foundation partners rather than annual re-application cycles.

3

Segregate Restricted from Unrestricted Funds

Run your runway calculator strictly on unrestricted funds to ensure legal compliance with donor intent.

Worked Calculation: Youth Literacy Foundation

Starting Cash$220,000
Monthly Cash Inflow$18,000
Monthly Cash Outflow$32,000

With $220,000 in unrestricted liquid reserves, $18,000 monthly average donor revenue, and $32,000 monthly program and overhead costs, net monthly burn is $14,000. Runway is 15.7 months, comfortably providing time to secure the next major foundation grant cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions: Nonprofits & Charities Runway
